Changa — The Smokable Vine
Changa is a smokable medicine made by infusing a DMT containing plant (dimethyltryptamine) into a base of sacred herbs — most traditionally the Ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) or other plants containing beta-carboline alkaloids (MAOIs). The combination of DMT and the MAOI-containing plant material is what makes Changa distinct.. The beta-carbolines slow the breakdown of DMT in the body, producing an experience that is smoother, deeper, and longer-lasting than pure DMT smoke. It is a bridge medicine, sitting between the instant intensity of Bufo and the long ceremonial river of Ayahuasca.
The intention of sitting with Changa is conscious contact with the deeper layers of self. Changa tends to be more navigable. There is often a felt sense of presence, of being accompanied, of moving through something rather than being erased by it. Participants come to Changa for clarity, for communication with inner wisdom, for emotional release, and for a direct encounter with the intelligence that lives beneath ordinary awareness. It is a medicine of perception, it does not take you out of yourself so much as it shows you what is already there.
Changa is typically smoked in one or more slow, intentional inhalations. The onset is fast and within seconds of exhaling, the shift begins. Visual fields may change immediately, with geometric patterns, color intensification, or full closed-eye visionary states appearing quickly. Emotions rise to the surface. The thinking mind becomes quiet or stops altogether. There is often a strong sense of presence like something aware and intelligent meeting you in the space. Many participants retain some degree of awareness of their body and surroundings during Changa. You may be able to move, speak softly, or respond to your facilitator. Some experiences are deeply visual and expansive. Others are emotional and somatic — waves of grief, joy, or relief moving through the body without a visual component. Both are valid. Both are the medicine working. Surrender remains the guiding principle. Changa will show you what needs to be seen.
The body typically softens and releases upon onset. Many participants experience tingling in the extremities, deep relaxation of the muscles, spontaneous breath changes, and waves of energy moving through the chest and limbs. Some experience mild nausea, particularly if the herbal base contains significant caapi vine. Vocalization, tears, laughter, or trembling are common as the body releases what the mind has been holding. Heart rate may elevate briefly at onset, then settle as surrender deepens. You will be seated or lying down in a held space with a facilitator present throughout.
Important: Because Changa typically contains MAOI-active plant material, participants must avoid certain foods, medications, and substances beforehand — particularly SSRIs, SNRIs, stimulants, and tyramine-rich foods. Screening and preparation guidelines will be provided. This is non-negotiable for your safety.
A single inhalation of Changa produces an active experience of approximately 10 to 20 minutes, occasionally longer depending on the potency of the blend and the individual. Multiple rounds may be offered depending on the ceremonial container. The integration window after the peak is soft and meditative — a gentle returning rather than an abrupt landing. Most participants feel grounded and present within 30 to 45 minutes of their last inhalation.
Changa serves as a teacher of perception. It shows participants how to move through altered states with some degree of agency — which makes it a valuable step in ceremonial progression. For those building toward Ayahuasca, Changa trains the nervous system to relax into non-ordinary consciousness, to trust the process, and to remain curious rather than fearful when the familiar falls away. It clears emotional debris, opens channels of inner communication, and cultivates the kind of flexible, surrendered presence that Grandmother Aya will ask for throughout a full night’s journey.
It is short in duration and precise in its work. Come with a clear intention.
